Whenever you contact one of your elected representatives, it is important to communicate your ideas in a clear, brief, respectful, and courteous manner. Contacting legislators can be a very effective tools when used properly.

Before you contact them, it is a good idea to get to know them a little better. Investing a little time to learn a little about their background, what issues are important to them, and what their positions are on various issues can help you communicate your issues and concerns more effectively to them. In particular,

• Know their committee assignments
• Know their voting record and bills they have recently sponsored
• Be aware of local news coverage of them
• Talk with their district staff in local offices about their positions and interests
